SynthID: The Invisible AI Watermark Coming to Every Image
Google is turning “Was this made with AI?” into a built-in question across Chrome and Search. The mechanism is invisible. The consequences are not.
For most of the internet’s history, images have arrived without context. A photo appears in your feed, in a group chat, on a news site, or in a search result, and you are left to do the oldest form of digital verification: guess. Was it edited? Was it staged? Was it made by a camera, by Photoshop, or by a prompt?
That era is ending. In May 2026, Google announced it is expanding SynthID verification to Search and Chrome, after already bringing it to the Gemini app and seeing more than 50 million checks globally. Soon, asking whether an image was made with AI could be as normal as right-clicking it.

How an invisible watermark actually works
SynthID works by embedding a digital watermark directly into the pixels of an image, or the equivalent signal layer in video, audio, and text output. For images, Google says the watermark is inserted in a way that remains imperceptible to the human eye while still being detectable by an algorithm that knows what to look for.
That distinction matters. Traditional metadata can be stripped the moment a file is screenshotted, downloaded, or reuploaded. SynthID is different because the signal lives inside the content itself, which means it can still survive many common transformations like resizing, compression, or light editing.

This is what makes SynthID important right now. Google is no longer treating watermarking as a back-end research project. It is moving the verification interface into products people already use every day: Gemini, Search, Circle to Search, Lens, and Chrome.
According to Google, users will be able to ask “Is this made with AI?” or “Is this AI generated?” directly on images. In Search, that means using tools like Lens, AI Mode, or Circle to Search. In Chrome, it means right-clicking an image and asking the browser. In Gemini, image, video, and audio checks are already live.

The catch
SynthID is powerful, but it is not magic
The biggest limitation is coverage. SynthID works best on content generated by systems that actually embed the watermark or support compatible provenance tools. If an image comes from a model that does not use SynthID or C2PA credentials, there may be nothing to detect at all.
That means SynthID is not a universal lie detector. It is a very strong signal inside a growing ecosystem of cooperating tools, not a magical test for all synthetic media on the internet. Google itself positions it alongside credential verification, not as a replacement for broader media literacy or source analysis.
